Everything the Light Touches..

Color and Light

Have you ever had the experience of picking a color, and then once the job is done the color looks completely different than it did on the sample you chose it from? Trust me when I say that this isn’t a unique experience—your eyes aren’t deceiving you, your lighting is.

Natural and artificial light can both greatly affect the way a color looks. The direction that your room is facing can greatly impact sun exposure, drastically changing the way that a color appears:

● North facing rooms receive warm, indirect natural light, making dark colors look even darker and muting lighter colors.

● South facing rooms receive the most intense natural light, dulling lighter colors and making darker colors look more vibrant.

● East facing rooms get lots of natural light in the mornings, but get a lot darker as the day goes on, making any color look duller as the light fades.

● West facing rooms are darker in the morning, but get great natural light as the day goes on. Warm colors like red and yellow can start to look too intense on particularly sunny days.

It’s a good idea to view your colors and finishes in the space you plan to use them in, you can even leave them in the room all day and view them as the light changes.
